The Scrum Team is the fundamental unit of Scrum. It consists of one Product Owner, one Scrum Master, and Developers. There are no sub-teams or hierarchies; instead, the Scrum Team is a self-managing, cross-functional group of professionals who collaborate to deliver value.

  • Product Owner (PO): The PO is accountable for maximizing the value of the product and managing the Product Backlog. They decide what the team should work on by clearly defining and ordering backlog items. However, the Product Owner does not dictate how the work is done — that remains up to the team.

  • Scrum Master (SM): The Scrum Master ensures Scrum is understood and enacted. They act as a servant-leader, helping the team improve its practices, remove impediments, and focus on creating valuable increments. They also coach the organization on Scrum adoption.

  • Developers: This group is accountable for turning Product Backlog items into usable increments each Sprint. Developers collectively decide how to plan the Sprint, create the Sprint Backlog, and ensure work meets the Definition of Done.

Together, these roles create a self-managing team. This means they decide internally who does what, when, and how. A typical Scrum Team is small — usually 10 or fewer members — which keeps communication efficient and helps the team remain agile.
